you clearly did not read through all the comments. I referenced our revolution as the exception that proved the rule. And the reason it was the exception - and what made the country exceptional - is that the armed mob that overthrew the British were held in check and led by arguably the greatest collection of intellectual elites ever to run a nation. Certainly the greatest collection of elites ever to organize a revolt. Unfortunately, too many who like to dress up in colonial garb and play Minuteman patriot want to - to paraphrase The Godfather - leave the elites, take the guns. A mindless, well-armed mob is not the path to either liberty or civility, but those who rail against the press, the academics and the elites while glorifying the role of the gun are leading us straight to a world dictated by that well-armed mob.
What we are doing in mythologizing the armed Minuteman is not unlike the bastardization of the Teutonic and Samurai warriors of ancient legend, as happened in early 20th century Germany and Japan, where honorable cultural icons were turned into cartoons that swayed the unthinking masses into a warlike, patriotic fervor without intellect or reason. We saw how that worked out. But at least there was a rational US to bail the world out. When we are the ones charmed by a misguided view of warrior history, who will bail us out?
If you truly loved your country, you would take the time not only to study history, but learn from it. Sadly...
